The Ontario First Nations Economic Forum (OFNEF) was held on January 14-15, 2010, in Fort William First Nation. OFNEF brought together over 350 First Nations, government and economic development leaders to discuss ways to better coordinate an approach to building more sustainable First Nations economies. The gathering was the first of its kind.
This forum has changed the course of First Nations economic development towards new approaches that recognize the need for full First Nations engagement at every stage of the process and support for our solutions to the First Nations economy.
The forum presented a unique opportunity for participants to clarify issues affecting First Nations economic development in Ontario. It was a chance to collaborate and discuss options and opportunities and commit to specific investments, plans and actions towards supporting First Nations economic development. A progress report on the activities since the forum has been prepared and is attached below. This document outlines what was heard at the forum, identifies important recommendations for moving forward, and presents examples of the progress that has taken place since January. The short-term work plan can also be found below.
