| BACKGROUND
CUSO is a Canadian-based international development organization,
which support alliances for global social justice. They work with
people striving for freedom, gender and racial equality, self-determination
and cultural survival and work with partners to protect the environment.
CUSO contributes to sustainable development and commits itself
to supporting all people who seek to strengthen their communities’ social,
economic and political development in a manner consistent with
the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
DISCUSSION
The conference was organized by CUSO in Winnipeg, March 19-22,
2004. It had delegates and participants, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal,
from across the globe. Guest speakers included National Chief Phil
Fontaine, Minister David Anderson, Sheila Watt-Cloutier, chair,
Circumpolar Conference First Nations Leader and the Honorable Hannignton
Alatoa, Ombudsman of the Government of Vanuatu, to name a few.
Topics ranged from linking local observations and experiences to
climate change to water and youth initiatives. Cultural presentations
were made by a variety of Aboriginal groups and an Actions & Solutions
Exhibit was included for all participants.
