Re: Communities and the Impact of Climate Change Conference

BACKGROUND

CUSO is a Canadian-based international development organization, which support alliances for global social justice. They work with people striving for freedom, gender and racial equality, self-determination and cultural survival and work with partners to protect the environment. CUSO contributes to sustainable development and commits itself to supporting all people who seek to strengthen their communities’ social, economic and political development in a manner consistent with the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

DISCUSSION

The conference was organized by CUSO in Winnipeg, March 19-22, 2004. It had delegates and participants, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, from across the globe. Guest speakers included National Chief Phil Fontaine, Minister David Anderson, Sheila Watt-Cloutier, chair, Circumpolar Conference First Nations Leader and the Honorable Hannignton Alatoa, Ombudsman of the Government of Vanuatu, to name a few. Topics ranged from linking local observations and experiences to climate change to water and youth initiatives. Cultural presentations were made by a variety of Aboriginal groups and an Actions & Solutions Exhibit was included for all participants.

Here is a list of some websites that discuss climate change and how we as individuals, leaders and communities can make a difference.
