TORONTO, ON - Ontario Regional Chief, Angus Toulouse, today responded to Federal Budget 2011 asserting that the Budget demonstrates the government’s lack of in-depth understanding of First Nations issues.

As stated by the Regional Chief: “First Nations in Ontario have been clear - what is required to assist in alleviating many of our problems, is a fundamental transformation in the relationship between the Canadian settler state and First Nations. We have repeatedly stated what our priorities are and how we would like to accomplish these, and we are repeatedly ignored.”

TORONTO, ON — As a continuous advocate for First Nations children, the Chiefs of Ontario are appalled by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) decision on March 14, 2011, to dismiss a complaint involving the inadequate funding of child welfare services on reserve by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). The case has been dismissed on the basis of legal technicalities.

INAC has recently announced that the NCBR will continue for the 2009/10 fiscal year. A call package requesting applications for 2009-2010 will be attached shortly. We understand that this is a temporary solution which will alleviate some of the pressure for 2009-2010, and the Chiefs of Ontario Chiefs Committee on Social Services and the Social Services Coordination Unit will continue to work with INAC to ensure that resources from this program continue to flow to the communities.
