Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulouse was pleased to attend a historic gathering of Indigenous Nations hosted by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy this past weekend at Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.
"This gathering was an important reminder that Indigenous laws are the founding laws of this land" stated the Regional Chief.
Delegates at the gathering had the opportunity to hear a reading of several wampum belts which collectively relate the history of treaty relationships among Indigenous Nations, and with the Crown.
"It is important that all citizens of our Nations, as well as the Canadian public, are aware of the true history of this land as recorded in the wampum record" noted Regional Chief Toulouse.
The Regional Chief acknowledged and expressed appreciation to the Confederacy Chiefs, Clanmothers and Faithkeepers for hosting this historic gathering. "This event represents the beginning of a process to renew relationships among Indigenous Nations. It is timely, important, and sets out a pathway to strengthen Indigenous Nationhood. I congratulate the Haudenosaunee Confederacy for sharing their vision and look forward to assissting in building upon this process of renewal."
