First Nations in Ontario Demonstrate Strength, Unity on National Day of Action

July 4, 2007 - "The events and marches planned by First Nation on June 29th were truly a success, and proved that First Nations are united in their efforts to achieve progress and improve the quality of life for First Nations citizens regardless of where they live -- First Nations citizens are First Nation citizens, and superficial boundaries do not change this fact" stated Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulouse.

Regional Chiefs Toulouse participated in a peaceful march in downtown Toronto organized by the Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation, the march included the participation of the Council Fire Native Cultural Centre, Miziwe Biik, Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation, and the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres.

"I am overwhelmed by the number of events organized by various First Nations across Ontario, and proud of the spirit, unity and strength they demonstrated on the Nation Day of Action" said Regional Chief Toulouse. First Nations including Red Rock First Nation, the Akwesasne Mohawks, Mushkegowuk Council, Serpent River First Nation, and Aamjiwnaang First Nation in southwestern Ontario are examples of those First Nations that held peaceful rallies and demonstrations on June 29th. "These activities and events were held to draw attention to the poor social conditions that are pervasive in our communities, and to call for immediate action to address these unacceptable circumstances and to appeal to the federal government to honour its' historical obligations and commitments to First Nations" stated Regional Chief Toulouse.

Approximately 25 separate events were held across the province on the National Day of Action. "This demonstrated that there is a widespread support for First Nations. It is a clear message to the federal and provincial governments to continue to act, in partnership with First Nations, on the First Nations issues to eradicate poverty and improve the standard of living in First Nations communities" said Regional Chief Toulouse.

The Regional Chief express appreciation to all organizations and citizens, First Nation and non-First Nation, that organized or participated in peaceful rallies and marches across the province.
