Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald Commemorates the 29th Anniversary of the Women’s Memorial MarchFebruary 14, 2020 3:13 pm
(Toronto, February 14, 2020) Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald acknowledges the 29th Annual Women’s Memorial March, a day to come together to remember and honour the women, girls and two-spirited individuals who have died or have gone missing.
“This year, 2020, marks the 29th anniversary of the Women’s Memorial March, a day we draw attention to and remember those women; the sister’s, mother’s, aunt’s and daughters, who have gone missing or murdered across this land. I would invite everyone to attend a local gathering or march to show your support, and help advocate for concrete action to end violence against Indigenous women and girls. I offer much respect to the families, community members, and organizations for your strength and determination in continuing to ensure that these remembrance marches continue.
With all the steps we have taken to make a better quality of life for First Nations in Canada, the fact that we are still having this conversation in 2020 and this March, is entirely unacceptable. These long and unresolved issues continue to profoundly impact our families, friends, and nations across Canada. The tragic cycle of abuse, racism and systemic violence against Indigenous women, girls and the LGBTQ2S+ community must stop. Until we achieve that ultimate goal, these marches will remain essential to raising awareness and shining a light on an issue that could have, and should have, been eradicated long past.
While this issue remains, we must continue to provide a platform to the voice for these women and girls to be heard. Together, we can ensure that those who have passed or are missing, receive the justice they deserve.”
