Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald Congratulates Chief Leo Friday and the Community of Kashechewan First Nation on the Signing of the 2019 Framework Agreement for RelocationMay 9, 2019 3:50 pm
(Toronto, May 9, 2019) Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald is applauding Kashechewan First Nation on their signing of the 2019 Framework Agreement – Relocation Implementation Plan along with the Governments of Canada and Ontario. For 17 years, Kashechewan First Nation has been forced to evacuate their community due to flooding and infrastructure concerns. This agreement commits both the provincial and federal government to collaborate with Kashechewan First Nation in developing a detailed work plan for community planning and a development process that will ultimately lead to the full relocation of the community inland to higher, safer ground.
“I am grateful that both the provincial and federal governments, Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Kashechewan First Nation worked diligently to make this happen in just one week. I’m relieved there is now a plan in a place to alleviate this ongoing situation, as this has been a long time coming.” said Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald. “This shows that when we are committed to working cooperatively, we can deal with the challenges faced by the community in a timely and efficient manner and ultimately, we are able deliver long term, tangible results.”
“There is now a concrete work plan that will guide the process, this was something that was missing from the last agreement.” said Regional Chief Archibald. “I am looking forward to seeing the community of Kashechewan have an active role in the development of these processes with both levels of government that is consistent with our rights and responsibilities as treaty holders. The relocation of Kashechewan First Nation is of top priority and I congratulate Chief Leo Friday, the council and community on advancing and advocating for their rights, while also leading the way to great change for their future generations.”
