Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day on North Caribou Lake First Nation’s Grand Opening of All-Season Bridge: Opening Doors to New OpportunitiesOctober 18, 2017 7:04 pm
(North Caribou Lake First Nation, October 18, 2017) “This new bridge has taken four years of planning and preparation thanks to the hard work of Chief Dinah Kanate and her council. No longer will North Caribou Lake residents and visitors be limited to the declining duration of an ice bridge and winter road to the south. Due to climate change, what was once a winter road season of 50 – 60 days has now become as low as 20 days, and in some cases, winter roads are the only way families are connected. Far too many northern communities rely upon winter roads as critical transportation links in order to receive larger items such as building materials and food items in bulk that can last for months.
The bridge, along with 45 kilometres of new all-season road, now provides North Caribou Lake year-round access to services in Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, and beyond. Residents no longer have to worry about their inability to access emergency services and secure goods that were previously inaccessible. Year-round transportation will help to create new economic opportunities within the community. This will help open doors to new opportunities that will ultimately lead to a better quality of life and a happy and healthy community.
Building permanent roads and bridges in the far north must become a priority so all First Nation communities can achieve the quality of life standards that their non-First Nation counterparts within this province and country currently enjoy”.
