Please find here information provided by the Assembly of First Nations as it relates to current fire situations. Information in the attached report was provided by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).

The purpose of the situation report is to provide an update on wildland fires that affect the health and safety and/or business continuity of First Nations on reserves. 

This report contains:

  • List of First Nations Impacted by Wildland Fires
  • 2016 Wildland Fire Season – Preliminary Wildland Fire Risk Assessment
  • Attached are maps indicating the First Nations currently affected as well as provincial and national active fire maps.

The Chiefs of Ontario (COO) is also providing you with the following information to assist with critical contact information and preventative planning documentation.

REPORT - MAY 24, 2016

INAC– Emergency Management Directorate (EMD) – Notification

Incident:  Notification 1 – Power Outage due to Wildland Fire (ON) – Pic Mobert First Nation (195) – 24MAY2016

First Nation Profile Summary:

* Pic Mobert First Nation (195) is located approximately 53 km east of Marathon with an on-reserve population of approximately 350.

Description of Incident:

*On 23MAY2016, the community experienced a power outage due to damage to hydro lines caused by a wildland fire in the area. That fire has since moved and the First Nation is not experiencing issues with smoke or fire.

*The power outage has placed the water treatment plant out of service as there is no backup generator. Additionally, there are concerns with food spoilage issues.

*On 24MAY2016, the First Nation declared a state of emergency due to the continued power outage.

*Ontario Hydro is currently estimating that power will be restored to the First Nation in the evening of 24MAY2016.

Current Actions & Responses:

*Bottled water has been distributed to community members since 23MAY2016, and the community has enough bottled water to get them through today 24MAY2016. 

*The First Nation has requested authorization to rent a back-up generator for the water treatment plant, an additional generator for a community common area with freezers to help members keep their food from spoiling, and bottled water for the community members. 

Future Actions:

*The Ontario regional office will continue to maintain contact with the community and provide support as required.

Assessment/Analysis:

*There is a chance of precipitation in the forecast for the area.

This will be the final notification for this event unless significant developments occur.
