Within these pages you will find information regarding the activities of the council such as work plans, resolutions, and bulletins, as well the issues being addressed by the OFNYPC. Our goal is to represent the youth of all First Nations in Ontario by being a voice for youth issues at all levels of government.

The OFNYPC is made up of regional representatives from each of the PTO’s in Ontario as well as the Independent First Nations. This structure ensures that there is accurate and fair representation of the diverse regions and communities at the provincial level.

Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council Acknowledgements

The Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council have secured $540,000.00 over four years, from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, to conduct activities that will meet the following objectives:

  • Development of 25 regional and community youth councils;
  • Development of a communication strategy;
  • Development of leadership training modules;
  • Planning of the Annual Youth Symposia

Please see our Work plan for a more detailed breakdown of the activities.

The Chiefs of Ontario have committed to assisting the youth in their development by ensuring the necessary resources would be available. However, it was the youth themselves that called for a provincial First Nations youth council. At the 1st Annual Youth Symposium in Hamilton, Ontario on November 2003, the youth in attendance called on the Chiefs of Ontario to begin coordinating the process of a youth council. As a result, a working group of young people was formed. Their task was to begin the development of the Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council by working on selection processes, terms of references, and work plans.

In March 2005, at the 2nd Annual Youth Symposium, the working group had finalized all their work and selection of the OFNYPC was completed. To date, the OFNYPC has begun orientation into their new roles and will be engaging in leadership development as well as strategic planning to outline their goals and objectives. We will also be identifying regional youth issues and looking at ways to address these issues.
